Ability to change Mandatory vs Optional Checklist Item via Automation Flow

Based upon a condition set in the automation flow (formerly rules) allow an action to “Edit Checklist Item” to allow either to update the checklist item name OR even better edit if a checklist item is mandatory or not.

    Thanks for the great suggestion.
    The good news is that you can already do this today using native Jira Automation.

    Because our app saves your checklist data as a plain text field under the hood, you can use Jira’s standard text .replace() function inside an "Edit work item" action to toggle the mandatory status.

    Here is how you can set it up right now:

    1. Add the "Edit work item" action to your rule.

    2. In the "Choose fields to set..." dropdown, select the Checklists field.

    3. Paste the corresponding formula below directly into that field's text area:

    • To make an item Mandatory (adds the !):

      {{issue.customfield_XXXXX.replace("- Your Item Name", "-! Your Item Name")}}

    • To make an item Optional (removes the !):

      {{issue.customfield_XXXXX.replace("-! Your Item Name", "- Your Item Name")}}

    (Note: Just replace customfield_XXXXX with your actual Checklists custom field ID).

    How it works:

    Jira Automation will look for that exact line of text, swap the prefix to add or remove the exclamation mark, and leave every other item in your checklist completely untouched. Once Jira saves the edit, our app reads the text change and applies it to your checklist (a quick page reload will show the updated UI to your users).
